popularly referred to as "Führer" by the German public and the Army's General Staff. He was officially given the title following a plebiscite that would combine the office of Reich Chancellor with that of the President.
At President Hindenburg's elaborate State funeral, General Werner von Blomberg (caught up in the moment) offered to have the Army officially refer to him as "Mein Führer." Hitler accepted.
The title loosely translates to "supreme leader." Conservatives of the 1800s hoped for the return of a constitutional monarchy, something Hitler would not accept. He knew somebody would have to succeed Hindenburg, however he didn't want to succeed him as President, but as Führer.
Franz von Papen convinced Hindenburg to declare in his will that in the event of his death, Germany would return to a constitutional monarchy. However Hindenburg instead sent it to Hitler in a personal letter. The letter was never found, and was most likely destroyed (on Papen's account following the war). The Nazis instead forged Hindenburg's political testament with an account of his days serving the Fatherland and compliments to Hitler. This was a propaganda tool in order to gain the upper hand at the upcoming plebiscite.

On August 2 1934, the following law was announced by the Reichstag after Hindenburg's death:
The Reich Government has enacted the following law which is hereby promulgated.
Section 1. The office of Reich President will be combined with that of Reich Chancellor. The existing authority of the Reich President will consequently be transferred to the Führer and Reich Chancellor, Adolf Hitler. He will select his deputy.
Section 2. This law is effective as of the time of the death of Reich President von Hindenburg.
This was unconstitutional according to the Enabling Act of 1933 which forbade Hitler from making any adjustments to the presidency, but no objections were raised. That was the extent of Hitler’s spell on the German people. He had already won over the Wehrmacht and Brownshirts, and nothing else stood in his way.

Führer, also spelled Fuehrer, German Führer. (“Leader”), title used by Adolf Hitler to define his role of absolute authority in Germany’s Third Reich (1933–45). As early as July 1921 he had declared the Führerprinzip(“leader principle”) to be the law of the Nazi Party; and in Mein Kampf(1925–27) he asserted that such a dictatorship would be extended to the coming Third Reich.

Führer was the unique name granted by Hitler to himself, in his function as Vorsitzender (chairman) of the Nazi Party. It was at the time common to refer to party leaders as "Führer", with an addition to indicate the leader of which party was meant. Hitler's adoption of the title was partly inspired by its earlier use by the Austrian Georg von Schonerer, a major exponent of pan-Germanism and German Nationalism in Austria, whose followers also commonly referred to him as the Führer without qualification, and who also used the Sieg Heil-salute. Hitler's choice for this political epithet was unprecedented in Germany. Like much of the early symbolism of Nazi Germany, it was modeled after Benito Mussolini's Italian Fascism. Mussolini's chosen epithet il Duce or "Dux" in Latin ('the Leader') was widely used, though, unlike Hitler, he never made it his official title. The Italian word Duce (unlike the German word Führer) is no longer used as a generic term for a leader, but almost always refers to Mussolini himself.

Hitler the dictator of Germany and the founder and leader of National Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi Party) rose to the power of German Politics. He initiated World War II and oversaw fascist policies that resulted in millions of death. He might be the man that everyone wants to hate, although one cannot disagree with his ability as a speaker. Above all it was Hitler’s obsessive speeches that revived his addressees and directed to his impressive ascend to superiority. Discover something new about Hitler other than dominance by reading the quotes below.
